How do proxies actually work?

I don’t really understand how proxies work. I only roughly imagine that traffic goes through some other server and somehow everything works without blocks or access restrictions. That’s it. I just want to figure it out, without going into details.

As I understand it, it’s basically the same as a VPN, just works for a specific program or browser. I probably won’t explain the scheme properly, but it’s something like your traffic goes through another server, and the site sees that server’s IP instead of yours.

Imagine that a proxy is like a little bridge between you and the site you want to visit. And this bridge is safe and reliable. Your traffic first goes to it, gets a new IP, and only then goes to the site. It is all super simple, and if you want a bit more detailed explanation, read it here in an article that is way more expert than my attempts to explain. A proxy is a cool thing, and nowadays it is almost an essential tool for online work.

Don't think I'm being stifling. I understand the usefulness of such software. However, there are things I wouldn't use a proxy for. For example, anything related to finance.
